Joy in the Journey: A Message for Today

Friends, I want to talk to you today about something we all need to hear: joy isn’t just found in reaching the finish line—it’s found in the journey itself. Paul talks about running a race in Philippians 3 and 4, and he reminds us that the Christian life is exactly like that. It’s not about perfection in a single moment—it’s about pressing on, growing, and letting Christ transform us day by day.

First, joy is in the pursuit¹. Don’t settle for yesterday’s accomplishments, and don’t get stuck in where you are today. Keep learning, keep stretching toward Jesus, and keep growing in your faith. Join a connect group, engage in Bible study, pray daily, and encourage others along the way. That pursuit, that daily effort, is where joy lives.

Second, consistency deepens joy². In a world that chases novelty, it’s easy to overlook the quiet, faithful practices—reading Scripture, praying, worshiping, being part of your community. These may seem small, but they shine bright. Doing the things we know we should do, consistently, builds a foundation of faith and a joy that can’t be shaken.

Third, we are called to live as Heaven’s colony³. Our lives are a mission field. Every act of love, every kind word, every moment we endure with grace, allows others to see Christ through us. Joy expands when we step beyond ourselves to serve others and bring a little bit of Heaven into the world around us.

Fourth, hope anchors our joy⁴. Today’s struggles are real, but the hope of Christ’s return reminds us that all things will be made right. This hope isn’t just a distant promise—it’s a source of strength for the present. It motivates us to stand firm, to persevere, and to live fully for God, even in the difficulties we face.

So, friends, remember this: we are imperfectly perfect. We will make mistakes, we will stumble, but God is redeeming, transforming, and guiding us every step of the way. Joy is in the journey—the everyday walk, the consistent effort, the mission we live out, and the hope that points us forward.

Let us run this race together, holding true to what we have attained, lifting others along the way, and keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus. That is where true joy lives.

Living by Promise, Not by the Law

In Galatians 4:21–31, Paul makes a really interesting point about the difference between living under the Law and living under God’s promise. He’s writing to the Galatians because some of them were starting to think they needed to follow the Law—like circumcision and other rules—to be right with God. Paul pushes back on that and basically says: if you really understood the Law, you’d realize it was never meant to save you in the first place¹. To explain this, Paul goes back to Abraham. Abraham had two sons—one with Hagar, a slave woman, and one with Sarah, a free woman². Ishmael (Hagar’s son) was born the natural way—through human effort and planning. But Isaac (Sarah’s son) was born through God’s promise, even when it seemed impossible³. Faith Isn’t a Fantasy: What the Bible Actually Teaches

It is understandable why some people—both inside and outside the church—begin to see Christianity through the lens of a kind of “sword and sorcery” fantasy. Popular imagery often portrays spiritual life as a dramatic battlefield filled with powerful warriors, overwhelming force, and visible dominance.
