Why Does Jesus Call God “Father” If God Is Genderless?

I understand why some people wonder, “If God doesn’t have a gender, why do we call Him ‘Father’?” It’s a fair question, but when you look at the Bible, it makes a lot of sense.

God isn’t male or female like we are. The Bible says God is spirit (John 4:24), so He’s beyond human stuff like gender. But our language has gender built into it—words like “he” and “she” are just how we talk. So calling God “Father” isn’t about saying God is a man; it’s about the way God relates to us.

In the Old Testament, God is called “Father” because He’s like a parent to His people—He made them, protects them, and loves them. For example, Deuteronomy 32:6 calls God our Creator and Father, and Isaiah 63:16 says the same. This isn’t about God’s gender, but His role.

Jesus made it even more personal. When He taught us to pray, He said, “Our Father in heaven...” (Matthew 6:9), showing that God wants a close, trusting relationship with us—like a child has with their dad. Jesus calls God “Father” all the time (John 17:1), so we know this is important.

And the Bible says when we believe, we become God’s children too. Romans 8:15 tells us we can call God “Abba, Father,” which means “Dad” or “Daddy”—a very personal way of saying we belong to Him.

So yes, “Father” sounds masculine because of language, but it really means God loves and cares for us. God chose to show Himself this way so we could understand how close He wants to be with us. Saying “Don’t call God Father because He has no gender” misses the point. It’s about relationship, not physical gender.

In the end, calling God “Father” is about love, care, and protection—the kind of relationship a good parent has with their kids. Jesus calling God “Father” invites us into that same relationship. So instead of focusing on the word itself, focus on what it means: God is our loving Creator who wants to be close to us.

Living by Promise, Not by the Law
