What’s the Rock?

When Jesus is with His disciples in Matthew 16, and He asks them “Who do you say I am?” Peter blurts out (because of course he does), “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” Boom. Nailed it.

Jesus then responds with one of the most quoted lines in church history:

“Now I say to you that you are Peter (which means 'rock'), and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it.” (Matthew 16:18, NLT)

Now here’s where things get a bit sticky: what exactly is “the rock”? Some say it’s Peter himself. After all, his name means “rock” (Petros in Greek). That’s where the Catholic view comes in, saying Peter was the first pope and leader of the Church. But let’s not stop there—because a few verses later, Jesus calls Peter “Satan” when Peter tries to talk Him out of going to the cross (Matthew 16:23). So, yeah... maybe Peter isn’t the most reliable foundation.

Now look back at what Peter said: “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” That’s not just a nice compliment—it’s a bold, Spirit-revealed confession of who Jesus really is. That truth—that Jesus is the Christ, the Savior—is what the entire Church is built on. And Jesus confirms it by saying, “Flesh and blood didn’t reveal this to you, but my Father in heaven did.” (Matthew 16:17)

Paul backs this up big time in 1 Corinthians 3:11 (NLT):
“For no one can lay any foundation other than the one we already have—Jesus Christ.”

And again in Ephesians 2:20 (NLT):
“Together, we are his house, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets. And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus himself.”

That’s crystal clear. Peter’s not the cornerstone—Jesus is. The apostles, including Peter, helped lay the foundation by spreading the gospel. But the actual rock—the unshakable, eternal core—is Jesus and the truth of who He is.

And remember how Jesus describes a wise person in Matthew 7:24–25 (NLT)?

“Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock… Though the rain comes... the house won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock.”

Jesus is that bedrock. That’s what He’s always been pointing to. So when He says, “On this rock I’ll build my church,” He’s talking about the unshakable truth that He is the Messiah, and anyone who believes in Him will not be shaken.

Living by Promise, Not by the Law

In Galatians 4:21–31, Paul makes a really interesting point about the difference between living under the Law and living under God’s promise. He’s writing to the Galatians because some of them were starting to think they needed to follow the Law—like circumcision and other rules—to be right with God. Paul pushes back on that and basically says: if you really understood the Law, you’d realize it was never meant to save you in the first place¹. To explain this, Paul goes back to Abraham. Abraham had two sons—one with Hagar, a slave woman, and one with Sarah, a free woman². Ishmael (Hagar’s son) was born the natural way—through human effort and planning. But Isaac (Sarah’s son) was born through God’s promise, even when it seemed impossible³. That’s the key difference Paul is pointing to: one represents human effort, the other represents God stepping in and doing what only He can do. Faith Isn’t a Fantasy: What the Bible Actually Teaches

It is understandable why some people—both inside and outside the church—begin to see Christianity through the lens of a kind of “sword and sorcery” fantasy.
