What Is Death?

Death is one of those things nobody wants to talk about, but we all know it’s out there. We dodge it in conversation, laugh it off in jokes, and try to distract ourselves from thinking about it. But deep down, we know—it’s going to happen. For everyone.

The Bible doesn’t tiptoe around it. Hebrews 9:27 puts it straight: “It is appointed unto men once to die, and after this comes judgment.” You don’t get to opt out. There’s no avoiding it unless Jesus comes back first.

Jesus even told a story that hits this point hard. It’s in Luke 16. He talks about a rich man who lived it up, had everything, and a poor guy named Lazarus who suffered terribly. They both die—because again, death doesn’t care how much money you had. Lazarus is carried by angels to Abraham’s side (a place of peace), but the rich man ends up in torment. He looks up, sees what he missed, and realizes too late that he lived only for this world and not for eternity.

That story makes something super clear—death is not the end. It’s the start of what comes next. The Bible doesn’t define death as “ceasing to exist,” it defines it as separation—your spirit leaving your body. James 2:26 says, “The body without the spirit is dead.” It’s not termination. It’s transition. And where you end up depends on what you did with Jesus.

But here’s the thing that gives me hope—because honestly, without it, I’d be terrified. If you belong to Jesus, death is nothing to be afraid of. It’s just walking from one room into another. 2 Corinthians 5:8 says that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. That’s incredible. Imagine—your eyes close here, and the next moment, you’re with Jesus. No fear. Just peace.

And it’s not just theory. People have seen this peace in real life. I’ve heard stories of Christians who passed away with a calm, even a joy, that’s unexplainable. I’ve also heard tragic accounts of people who didn’t know Christ and faced death with fear and dread. One powerful story I’ll never forget was of a father saying goodbye to his kids. He told the ones who had trusted Christ, “Goodnight, I’ll see you in the morning.” But to the one who hadn’t, he just said, “Goodbye.” That hits hard. Eternity matters.

Look, I’m not trying to be dramatic. I just want to tell the truth. Jesus said in John 11:25, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me will live, even though they die.” If you’ve trusted Jesus as your Savior, you don’t have to fear death. You have eternal life—not because of anything you’ve done, but because of what He did on the cross.

But if you haven’t trusted Him yet—please don’t wait. Eternity is real. Heaven is real. Hell is real. And Jesus is the only way to life.

Don’t roll the dice with your soul.

Choose Jesus while you still have time. Peace, hope, and eternal life are waiting—because of Him.
