Hell Is Real, and People Are Headed There — But Jesus Offers a Way Out

I recently listened to a sermon that shook me to the core—not because it was fancy or polished, but because it told the hard truth. The preacher sat in a coffee shop and watched dozens of people walk by, and he suddenly realized: most of them are lost. Not just confused or struggling—spiritually lost. Headed for hell. And many don’t even know it.

Hell isn’t a popular topic these days. Even in churches, we often soften it, avoid it, or explain it away. But Jesus didn’t. He warned about hell more than anyone else in the Bible. In Matthew 25:46, Jesus said, “They will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous will go into eternal life.” That’s as clear as it gets—hell is real, eternal, and final.

The preacher reminded us that hell wasn’t made for people. It was created for the devil and his angels (Matthew 25:41). But when people reject God, they end up sharing the devil’s fate. The scary thing is, many are walking that road right now—the broad road that leads to destruction (Matthew 7:13). And unless something changes, they’ll keep walking right off the cliff.

What hit me hardest in that sermon was the description of people living normal, distracted lives—glued to their phones, chasing money, addicted to entertainment—totally unaware that they are spiritually dead. It reminded me of 2 Corinthians 4:4, which says that “Satan…has blinded the minds of those who don’t believe.” They’re not just ignoring God. They can’t even see Him.

But here’s the good news: God didn’t leave us in the dark. He sent Jesus to rescue us. Jesus is the "off-ramp" from the highway to hell. He said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). When we put our trust in Him, we’re saved—not because we’re good people, but because He took the punishment we deserved on the cross.

That preacher said something powerful: “If you go to hell, you’ll have to step over the broken body of Jesus to get there.” In other words, God has done everything possible to save you—except force you to accept Him. He leaves that choice up to you.

Now, to be fair, the sermon could’ve been a bit more organized. It jumped around a lot and leaned heavily on personal stories. But the heart of it was true and biblical. It made one thing painfully clear: We’ve got to stop pretending hell is a myth. It’s real. It’s forever. And people we love are heading there if they don’t turn to Jesus.

So what do we do? We stop being silent. We stop softening the gospel. We stop worrying about being liked. We tell the truth. Hell is real—but so is salvation. Jesus is still saving people. And it’s not too late.

Let’s live like that’s true. Because it is.

Living by Promise, Not by the Law

In Galatians 4:21–31, Paul makes a really interesting point about the difference between living under the Law and living under God’s promise. He’s writing to the Galatians because some of them were starting to think they needed to follow the Law—like circumcision and other rules—to be right with God. Paul pushes back on that and basically says: if you really understood the Law, you’d realize it was never meant to save you in the first place¹. To explain this, Paul goes back to Abraham. Faith Isn’t a Fantasy: What the Bible Actually Teaches
