Satan’s Real—but Jesus Already Won

Alright, let’s talk about Satan. He’s real. Not some fairy tale or cartoon villain, but a real spiritual being who opposes God and tries to mess up our lives. The Bible doesn’t sugarcoat it. But here’s the thing: even though he’s dangerous, Satan is totally defeated by Jesus.

Jesus Himself faced Satan in the wilderness and shut him down hard:
“Get out of here, Satan… You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him.” (Matthew 4:10, NLT)

Peter warns us to stay sharp:
“Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.” (1 Peter 5:8, NLT)

Paul tells us Satan is the god of this world who blinds people:
“Satan, who is the god of this world, has blinded the minds of those who don’t believe.” (2 Corinthians 4:4, NLT)

And Jesus calls him a liar:
“He was a murderer from the beginning…and when he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” (John 8:44, NLT)

Even though Satan tries hard, God sets limits. Remember Job? Satan had to ask God’s permission before he could test him. Satan is defeated by Jesus through the cross:
“They have defeated him by the blood of the Lamb and by their testimony.” (Revelation 12:11, NLT)

Paul explains it like this:
“In this way, he disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by his victory over them on the cross.” (Colossians 2:15, NLT)

The world got messed up because of sin—Satan’s influence brought pain, death, and brokenness. But God’s plan to fix all that came through Jesus. Like John 3:16 says:
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.”

We’re called to put on the full armor of God to stand strong against Satan:
“Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil.” (Ephesians 6:10-11, NLT)

This armor includes truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, God’s Word, and prayer.

The Church of the Nazarene talks about holiness as living fully surrendered and set apart for God, reflecting His character so Satan can’t get a foothold. As Peter puts it:
“You must be holy because I am holy.” (1 Peter 1:16, NLT)

And when things get tough, we can lean on God’s promises. Psalm 23 reminds us:
“The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need… Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me.” (Psalm 23:1, 4, NLT)

So here’s the bottom line: don’t overestimate Satan’s power. He’s real, but Jesus already crushed him. Our job? Know his tricks, wear God’s armor every day, stay connected to God and other believers, and trust that Jesus has the final victory.

Living by Promise, Not by the Law

In Galatians 4:21–31, Paul makes a really interesting point about the difference between living under the Law and living under God’s promise. He’s writing to the Galatians because some of them were starting to think they needed to follow the Law—like circumcision and other rules—to be right with God. Paul pushes back on that and basically says: if you really understood the Law, you’d realize it was never meant to save you in the first place¹. To explain this, Paul goes back to Abraham. Abraham had two sons—one with Hagar, a slave woman, and one with Sarah, a free woman². Ishmael (Hagar’s son) was born the natural way—through human effort and planning.
