Reflecting on Ron Pope’s “Things Jesus Didn’t Say” — A Call Back to Jesus’ True Teachings

As Christians, we know that following Jesus means more than just repeating familiar phrases or wearing the label of faith. It means living out the radical love, mercy, and humility He taught. Recently, I came across a folk song by Ron Pope called “Things Jesus Didn’t Say” that powerfully reminded me of this.

The song gently points out some common sayings that many people think come from the Bible but actually don’t. For example, phrases like “God helps those who help themselves,” or “Success is proof you’re blessed by God,” aren’t words Jesus spoke. Instead, Ron Pope contrasts these with the real messages of Christ: inviting the weary, blessing the merciful, loving our enemies, feeding the hungry, and welcoming strangers.

This is such an important reminder for believers today. Sometimes it’s easy to get caught up in worldly ideas of success, judgment, or division—even within Christian communities. But Jesus calls us to a different way. His Kingdom is about grace, compassion, and servant leadership.

Ron Pope’s song is a humble invitation to reflect honestly on how closely our lives align with Jesus’ teachings. Are we truly loving as He loved? Are we welcoming those who are different? Are we seeking to serve rather than be served?

In a time when faith can be mixed with many competing voices and pressures, it’s refreshing to hear a clear call back to the heart of the Gospel. Let’s take this song as a prayer and a challenge: to live not by what people say Jesus said, but by His actual words and example.

Living by Promise, Not by the Law

In Galatians 4:21–31, Paul makes a really interesting point about the difference between living under the Law and living under God’s promise. He’s writing to the Galatians because some of them were starting to think they needed to follow the Law—like circumcision and other rules—to be right with God.
